Abstract

18,957. Bronner, A. F., and Quick, A. A. Aug. 23. Variable - speed epicyclic gearing.-Relates to epicyclic gearing of the kind employing an oscillating and rotating wheel mounted on a cam on the driving - shaft, means being provided to prevent u n b a l a n c e d forces on the shaft &c. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the driving-shaft B carries a cam D, which may be fixed to or slide on a feather on the shaft and has no projecting abutments; on this cam turns loosely an oscillating wheel E with teeth E<1>, E<2> engaging teeth F<1>, H<1> on a fixed oil - retaining casing F and a wheel H on the driven shaft C, respectively. The boss E<5> of the wheel E is formed spherical to engage similar cups in the wheel H and casing F. Fig. 2 shows a form in which, for driving a winding-drum or winch barrel M, the wheel E has duplicate sets of teeth engaging duplicate sets on the fixed parts F and the driven drum, so as to balance the thrusts of the engaging parts. Fig. 3 shows a modification adapted to be employed as a variable-speed gear. The wheel E has five sets of teeth gearing with wheels H, P carrying pulleys P<5>, H<5>, with wheels J, K carrying brake-drums J<3>, K<3>, and with a casing F carrying a pulley F" and a brake-drum F<3>. Any of the brakedrums may be held, and the power taken from any of the pulleys. The boss of the wheel E is formed spherical, as in Fig. 1. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also the following matter. The invention is applicable to gears for high-speed motors, presses, drawing-benches, steering-gears, &c. The teeth on the wheels may be dispensed with. By reversing the action the gear may be used as a multiplying-gear. A variable-speed gear similar to that shown in Fig. 3 is described, only one driven wheel being provided, but the braked wheels being also provided with means for transmitting power. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the wheels J, K may be provided with means for transmitting power. The action of the device is more fully described with the aid of diagrams. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
