Abstract

16,760. Metcalf, F., and Dalgleish, E. July 13. Winches; driving-gear; constant-tension and tension-regulating apparatus. - Ships' winches are adapted for use as non-reversible winding- drums for breaking-out and raising the anchors, and as regulated-tension winding-devices for vessels riding at anchor, or for towing or the like. Figs. 1 and 2 show a winch comprising a drum 11 driven by spur gearing from the electric motor 33. The elements 22, 23 of a spring friction clutch are adjustably connected to the pinion 19 by the screwed hand-wheel 25, so that the clutch slips at a predetermined pressure and allows the overloaded drum. to pay out the rope. When in use as a regulated-tension appliance, reversal of the motor is prevented by a pawl 35, and a cam-plate operating a. sliding bar 49 is connected to the toothed wheel 41 on the drum shaft by a spring pin. As the drum revolves to pay out the overloaded rope, the tooth 40 operates the wheel 41, and the bar 49 is forced downwards to close a switch 52, thereby supplying current to the motor to resist the paying-out of the rope. When the strain on the rope becomes normal, the motor re-winds the rope until the depression on the cam-plate allows the bar to rise again and operate a cutout switch 53. A pawl 16 may be engaged with the drum to render the apparatus non-reversible and thus suitable for utilizing the lifting movement of the ship for breaking-out an anchor.
