My. invention relates to the class of devices that are employed for the purpose of swinging derricks to place the booms thereof'in different positions. and an object of the invention, among others, is theproduction of an apparatus of this type that shall besimple in construction and particularly eflicient in operation.
One form of derrick swinger embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of a derrick swinger embodying my invention the means for elevating the boom being omitted.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a view, scale enlarged, and partially in horizontal section, illustrating a portion of the hoist and the construction of the operating-unit.
Figure 4 is a side view of the same.
My invention illustrated and described herein contemplates a structure that may be readily attached to .or detached from a hoisting apparatus, that may, in general, be of any common construction, but so equipped that it rnay readily receive my improved operating unit. In the accompanying drawings the numeral ,5 indicates the base of a hoist that may comprise, briefly described, a motor 6, connected by a train of gears with a shaft mounting a drum 7 connected by any suitable mechanism as a train of gears with another drum 8, the shaft of the drum 7 having a spool .01 winch head 9 secured thereto. This hoist may be employed for any of the different purposes for which hoists are used and it contemplates the attachment of a spool or winch head, similar to the spool or winch head 9, to the shaft of the drum 8, In adapting my invention to the present structure I arrange the spool or .winch head for the shaft of the drum 8 so that said spool may be readily detached from the shaft and a member of my improved operating ,unit may be substituted therefor.
This improved operating unit comprises a housing 10 having a bossll with a fiat side to fit against the side of a post 12 comprising a bearing for the shaft of the drum 8 of the hoist. Screws or bolts 13, or other suit able .fastenings, may be passed through the side wallgof the boss 11 to secure the housingin place. u

The shaft '14 for the drum 8 extends through the boss 11 and into the chamber 15 in the housing when the latter has been secured in place,and the spool or winch head having been removed from theshaft 14 before securing the housing and the mechanism. contained therein in position, a bevel gear 16'is secured to the projecting end of the shaft in any suitable manner. An open ing 41 is formed through the wall of the boss 11 sufficiently large to permit passage therethrough of the gear 16 when the housing is placed in position. This bevelgear comprises a part of the mechanism of my improved operating unit, the rest of said mechanism including a shaft 17 mounted in suitable bearings in the end of the housing 10 and having loosely mounted thereon bevel gears 1819.that mesh with the bevel gear 16. A clutch member 20 is splined to the shaft 17 and has on its opposite faces teeth adapted to engage with pins 21 on the gears 18 and 19 to connect either of said gears to I drive the shaft 17. A handle 22 may be employed asa means for shifting the clutch member 20 and in a manner that will be readily understood without a further and detailed description herein.
The shaft 17 has a worm 23 secured there-v to, said worm meshing with a worm gear 2 1 on a spooloperating shaft 25 mounted in the housing 10, and as illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings. Spools or winch heads 26 are secured to the shaft 25 on opposite sides of the housing, said spools being adapted to receive a cable 27, the ends of which are, secured to said spools and are wound in opposite directions around said spools, the construction thus providing means whereby the spools are positively driven simultaneously in the same directions to both wind and unwind the cable.
Any form of derrick structure may be connected to my improved hoisting apparatus, that herein shown being in the form of a derrick-crane comprising a sill 28, a post or mast 29, legs'or stays 30 and a boom 31, all of which may be supported in operative relation with respect to the driving unit herebeing pivotally supported at the upper end of the legs or stays 30 or. other supportmg' means.
From this construction it willy be noted that the hoist may be readily equipped with my improved operating unit and that the derrick structure may be readily located in operative relation with respect to said hoist and unit, and that when connected up, as herein illustrated and described, the derrick structure may be readily swung to present the boom in any position desired, and when so swung will remain in any position in which it may come to rest, the worm and worm gear connection comprised in the operating unit effecting a positive lock to maintain the derrick against unintentional swinging movement. It will be understood that any suitable hoistingtackle will be attached to the derrick structure and extended to the drums 7 and 8 for hoisting purposes as by means of a cable passing in contact with sheaves 33 on the post or mast. such means not being specifically illustrated herein. As this construction and arrangement will be understood by those skilled in the art a further and detailed description and illustration thereof is omitted herein.
It will further be understood that the drums 7 and 8 are mounted loosely on the shafts 14 and are operatively connected therewith as by means of friction clutches,
one member of which is secured to a gear 34 and 'nroiects into a clutch recess in the flange 35 of the drum, a cam 36 secured to a handle 37 being employed to force the drum slightly endwise on its shaft and thereby cause the clutches to engage in a manner that will be readily understood, the cam 36 bearing against an opposing cam 88 fixed to a post 39, and as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The gear 34 forms one member of the train of gears hereinbefore referred to, such gear being secured to the shaft 14;
An ordinarv brake device common to structures of this kind may be employed to control rotation of the drums, said brake device being actuated as by a pedal 40, the connection of the pedal with the brake device not being shown, as it will .be readily understood by those versed in the manipulation of devices of this kind.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the princlples of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative and that the in vention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out. 7

A derrick swinging apparatus including actuating mechanism comprising a frame with a drumshaft mounted thereon and projecting beyond the side of said frame, a bevel gear removably'secured to the projecting end of said shaft, an operating unit including a case detachably secured to said frame, driving mechanism mounted in bearings supported by and within said case and including a gear. mounted to mesh with the gear on the drum shaft when the driving unit is placedin position, and a spool shaft comprising a part of saiddriving mechanism, means to secure said case in place and an operative connection between said spool shaft and the gear of the driving mechanism.
3. A derrick swinging apparatus includmg an actuatmg mechanism comprismg a frame with a drum shaft mounted thereon,
a bevel gear detachably secured to said shaft, an operating unit including a case with driving mechanism therein, said driving mechanism including two bevel gears positioned to mesh with the bevel gear on the drum shaft when the case'is placed in position, a spool shaft operatively connected with said bevel gears, and meansfor detachably securing said case to said frame.
4. A derrick swinging apparatus including an actuating mechanism comprising a frame with a drum shaft mounted thereon, a bevel gear on the end of said shaft, an operating unit including a case with driving mechanism therein, said driving mechanism including two bevel gears positioned to mesh with thebevel gear on the drum shaft when the case is placed in position, a worm shaft on which said bevel gears are mounted, a clutch splined to the worm shaft and having means for alternately engaging said two bevel gears, means for actuating said clutch, a spool shaft extending through the sides of said frame and having a worm wheel in mesh with said worm, spoolssecured to the outer ends of said'spool shaft, and means for detachablysecuring said case to said frame.

a driving gear secured to said shaft, a driv- 5 ing mechanism including a Worm shaft, tWo gears loosely mounted thereon and engaged With said driving gear, a clutch splined to said Worm shaft and having means for alternately engaging said gears thereon, means for actuating said clutch, a spool 10 shaft extending through the sides of said frame and having a Worm Wheel in mesh With said Worm, and spools secured to the outer ends of said spool shaft.
