Abstract

1411177 Cab elevator for cranes POTAIN 19 Feb 1973 [16 Feb 1972] 7959/73 Heading B8H The control cab 10 of a crane is raisable between the ground and an operating position to save the operator the climb up a mast 1. The cab is suspended by cables 12 from a parallelogram linkage 4 pivoted to a cab mast 2 mounted on the mast 1. The cables form double run tackles about pulleys 11 at each side across the width of the cab 10 and are wound on a drum (18), Fig. 8 (not shown). A safety cable 6 secured to the centre of the cab passes around a spring biased pulley 13 and is wound on a drum (19). The cable 6 may include a central cable (14), Fig. 6 (not shown), or a separate control cable may be connected to the cab and be wound on a further pulley (19). In use, the cab is raised by the cables 12 until it engages with the linkage 4 and locked thereto by a locking device 8. Further movement of the cables 12 moves the linkage 4 and the cab in an arc towards the mast until the linkage is locked to the cab mast 2 by a locking device 9. A crane control cable can then be connected to the cab. To lower the cab the above procedure is reversed. The drums (18), (19) of the cables 12 and 6 are driven by an electric motor (16) through a reduction gear-box (17). The drum (18) is coupled direct to the output shaft 22 of the gear-box, whilst the drum (19) is connected by way of a one-way drive (23) and a spring biased friction clutch (25). The drum 19 is slightly greater than half the diameter of the drum 18, due to the cable 6 having a single run tackle compared with the double run tackles of the cables 12, with any speed differential between the drums being accommodated by the friction clutch. Mounted on the end of the drum (19) remote from the drum (18) are a pair of spring biasedpawls (31), Fig. 9 (not shown), which move outwardly under excessive drum rotation, through failure of the cables 12, to engage in housing (29) and stop rotation of the drums and movement of the cab. The spring biased pulley 13 accommodates the initial braking forces.
