Abstract

20,383. Fielding, J. Sept. 14. [Cognate Application, 2910/12.] Tension-regulating winding and paying-out apparatus; driving-gear.-Comprises an electrically-operated boat-hoist in which the hoisting- rope is kept taut as the boat rises and falls on the waves by means of the employment of a slipping clutch between the motor and hoisting- drum so that while the motor runs in one direction, the movement of the drum may be arrested or even reversed. The motor 1 drives a shaft 2, upon which is secured a vane wheel 3. A spring-pressed sliding clutch member 9 is also feathered on the shaft 2. The casing 4, the pinion 7 operating the hoisting-drum, and the outer member 8 of a multiple disk friction clutch are fixed to a hollow shaft 5 surrounding the shaft 2. The casing 4 contains oil, water, or the like. The friction clutch is put in by a solenoid 18 and is held in action by the weighted bell-crank lever 19 during hoisting. When the solenoid is de-energized and the clutch released, the power necessary for keeping the hoisting-rope taut is transmitted through the hydraulic transmitting - device or through the clutch, or through both.
