one direction, to prevent sudden shocksor jars in operation; second, to provide an improved means of controlling; a lowering mechanism, and third, the providing of a hoisting and lowering mechanism, with suitable operating mechanism and control.
We attain these objects bythe mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of the entire ap-fpliance installed; Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view partly in section of the automatic dumb waiter; Fig. 1 is an enlarged view of the dumb waiter head shown in Fig. 1 and having the hub of the driving pulley exposed in order to show the releasing mechanism; Fig. 5 is a face view showing the governor weights in place; Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of the governor plate; Fig. 7 is a view of the governor plate taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 6; and
Fig. 8 is an enlarged View of the governor weights.

The operation of our invention is as fol lows-Having installed the dumb waiter in the usual manner, we use the hand rope to hoist the car. When the car is at the proper landing the brake is applied by hand and in stopping the dumb waiter, shock which.
might be caused by the suddenstopping of a long rope and pulleys runnmg at high speed is prevented by means of the automatic attachment of driving pulley 25 to intermediate shaft 2 L 7 Having thus described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isv V 1; The combination with a pulley, of a rotatable and longitudinally movable brake for controlling the movement of said pulley, means actuated by the speed of movement of said pulley for automatically throwing said brake into operation, a gearing mechanism operating said pulley, a power mechanism applied to said gearing mechanism, automatic means of attaching said power mechanism to said gearing mechanism whereby the power mechanismhas a loose movement in one direction of operation from the gearing mechanism.
'2. The combination with a pulley, of a brake for controlling the movement of said pulley, means actuated by the speed of movement of said pulley for automatically throwing said brake into operation, a gearing mechanism operating said pulley, a power mechanism applied to said gearing mechanism, automatic means of attaching said power mechanism to said gearing mechanism whereby the power mechanism has a loose movement in one direction of operation from the gearing mechanism.
3. In a dumb waiter, a driving shaft, a
driven shaft, positively operative mechanism connecting said two shafts, a governor brake operating to control the speed of one of said parts consisting of, a pair of rotating parts provided with means of automatically braking said parts upon the increase of speed of one of said parts, the said two parts being positively geared to operate at different speeds.
&. In a dumb waiter, a driving shaft, a driven shaft, positively operative mechanism connecting said two shafts, a governor brake operating to control the speed of one of said parts oonsistingof, a pair of rotating parts provided with means of automatically bra-king said parts upon the increase of speed of one of said parts, the said two parts being positively geared to operate at different speeds and positively operative mechanism between said brake and the one of said shafts.
