Overwinding, preventing.-An electric clutch or connexion is provided between the control lever or rope and the winding-gear, so that when the circuit of the electric device is automatically broken at the end of the wind, the control lever or rope is freed from the winding-gear, which is thereby put out of action and the winding stopped. The invention is shown applied to a hoist of the kind in which the winding-drum 2 is carried in eccentrically-mounted bearings which may be rotated by a lever 7 to bring a friction wheel 5 on the drum shaft into contact with a constantly rotating wheel 4. The lever 7 is raised by a rope 8 acting through an electromagnet 10, the circuit of which is completed through two switches 15 which may be opened by a nut 17 travelling in accordance with the movement of the hoisting-rope 9. The switches 15 may be operated by stops on the hoisting-rope or by any part driven by the winding-gear. When the lever 7 is released, the friction gear disengages and a brake is applied. Where the hoist is operated directly by a hand-lever, one member of the electro-magnet may be carried by a second lever, so that when the current is on, this lever and the lever 7 move as one.
