Abstract

9935. Babcock & Wilcox, and Hollick, F. W. April 22. Regulating-gear for winding and paying-out apparatus.-Relates to winding-apparatus such as is described in Specification 17,624/00, including a load-sustaining brake which is relieved when lowering, and a brake which is applied to an epicyclic gear when hoisting, and comprises means for controlling the brakes. Fig. 1 shows a plan of a winding-apparatus in which the brake strap 8 of the epicyclic gear is operated by a right and left handed screw-threaded shaft 10, the brake being normally held off by a weight 13 and. applied by a solenoid 14. The strap 18 of the load-sustaining brake is normally applied through similar means by a weight 13' and is relieved by a solenoid 14<1>. Fig. 7 shows the means for controlling the brakes. The switch lever 20, when released. returns to the central position. When moved to the right, the solenoid 14<1> is energized, and the strap 18 gradually released through the resistances 24 to allow the load to be lowered. When moved to the left, the solenoid 14 is energized through the resistances 22 to apply the brake 8 gradually so as to transmit power with increasing intensity through the epicyclic gear. Further contacts 28 may be provided on the power side to permit the simultaneous operation of the brakes, the arrangement being such that the load-sustaining brake is only released when the strap 18 has sufficient frictional engagement to prevent the load from running down.
