[Class 103 (i)] [Also in Group XXV] Doors, particularly of vehicles, are prevented from swinging out uncontrolledly by the provision of a brake which acts during the opening movement of the door unless specially released from the door handle or an adjacent control device. In the form shown, the brake device, mounted on the door, comprises a drum 4, 5, containing a spiral return spring, connected to the door frame by a cable 15 passing over appropriate pulleys, and a brake drum 9 connected to the drum 5 by ratchets 14 which drive it only during opening of the door ; the brake band 24 is tensioned adjustably by a spring 23 to provide the required resistance to opening of the door, and its tension can be relieved, to allow free opening, by a lever 28 which engages the brake band and is operated by a cord 27 from the door handle. Any other form of free-wheel coupling may be employed in place of the ratchets 14, and the coupling may act axially instead of radially ; the braking action may be removed by means freeing this coupling instead of slackening the brake band. Other forms of brake may be used. The device may be placed on the frame instead of the door, and rigid connections may be used in place of the cord ; the connection preferably includes means to limit the opening of the door. Release of the brake may be performed by hydraulic or electrical means in place of the cord 27 or other mechanical means.
