Abstract
612,940. Winches. NORBURY, E. June 11, 1946, No. 17360. [Class 78(v)] A winch comprises a driving shaft 12, Fig. 1, a drum 13 journalled on the shaft and having an axiallyextending flange 15 on one side, a fixed plate 16 over the flange opening, a sun-gear 22 fixed on the shaft and connected with an internally-toothed annulus 23 on the flange by a planetgear 19 supported by the carrier 18 journalled on the shaft, and a doubleacting brake shoe 27, 26 which is supported by the plate and selectively movable to brake the carrier or the flange. In the embodiment, the winch is controlled by latch-released lever 31, Fig. 2, which is connected by toggle levers 29, 30 to brake shoes 26, 27, which are pivoted at 28, to stationary plate 16; and is also controlled by pawl 34 pivoted to plate 16 and held by spring 35 against ratchet teeth 33 on drum flange 15. In the position of Fig. 2, the brakes hold planet carrier 19 and the motor drives the drum to wind in the rope. When the lever 31 is moved to the right, the brakes are applied to the flange, and abutment 38 on an extension of lever 31 catches arm 40 fixed to the pawl and moves the latter away from the ratchet so as to be held by leaf spring 41. When the lever 31 is moved back to the left to an intermediate position, the pawl is fixed and the brake is unapplied so that the rope can pay out freely. When moved fully to the left, the brake brakes the carrier and abutment 43 on the extension of lever 31 knocks arm 40 and causes the pawl to contact the ratchet teeth. Fig. 4. To prevent the cable weight unwinding the cable from the drum, an arm 48 is pivoted to the stationary plate 16 at 46 and applies a brake 45 to the drum periphery when the cable, which passes through loop 49 of the arm 48, slackens. The winch may be mounted on a tractor and be driven by the power take-off shaft so as to actuate a crane also mounted thereon. Specification 613,227 is referred to.
