Abstract

666,918. Winches. NEALE, WRIGHT, & CO., Ltd., and NEALE, G. W. June 12, 1950. [July 4, 1949] No. 17574/49. Class 78 (v). A power-driven winch comprises a drum, a controllable mechanically connected clutch and brake, each of the expanding shoe type, the brake being released when the clutch is engaged and vice versa, and a normally engaged one-way acting safety brake which allows rotation of the drum when the clutch is engaged and which is released by the clutch and brake control when the latter is actuated to apply the controllable brake. An internal combustion engine 16 mounted on a wheeled frame 12 drives a shaft 20 through chain-and-sprocket gearing. A winding drum 21 is free on this shaft, but can be connected thereto by clutch shoes when they are expanded by an actuator 23. These shoes are connected to an anchor plate 22 carried by the shaft. Brake shoes attached to a fixed plate 25 are expanded by an actuator 26. The actuating means 29, 30 for the clutch and brake are connected bv a control rod 28. In one extreme position of this rod, the clutch is engaged and the brake released and in the other position the brake is on and the clutch released. In an intermediate position the clutch and brake are released. When the rod 28 is moved from the intermediate position to the position in which the clutch is released, a cam 36 mounted on it releases a one-way acting safety brake 32.
