Abstract
506,343. Winding and paying - ont apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and PETCH, JUN., T. H. Nov. 23, 1937, No. 32234. [Class 78 (v)] In a winding system having two rope drums one for winding and the other for simultaneously paying out, and wherein at least one drum is loose and is clutched to the drive for normal working, but may be declutched and normally held by a brake for unbalanced working, means are provided for cutting off the power and applying an emergency brake if the loose drum starts to rotate when declutched. A pawl B pivoted to the main controlling lever D is normally held by a cam A out of engagement with a ratchet wheel C. When the drum is declutched, the cam permits the pawl to engage the ratchet wheel and the latter is driven by the loose drum. on any movement thereof occurring. The pawl is thus pulled to the left, swinging the main controlling lever over to operate a switch L which controls the supply of power to the winding motor and controls the emergency brake. The device may be arranged to function whichever direction the loose drum rotates in and may control either an electric motor or a steam or otherengine.
