[Class 78 (v)] In a winch the clutch lever 6 rests on the lateral lug 8 of the brake lever 5 so as to be movable therewith from the clutch disengagement to engagement position as the brake lever is moved from its braking to its release position and means (e.g. spring bolt 9) is provided for retaining the clutch lever in the engagement position as the brake lever returns to its braking position and subsequently causing the clutch lever to return to its disengagement position. Fig. 2. Brake lever 5 is coupled to bolt 9 by rod 13 which passes through an aperture in cranked lever 11, 11a to the other limb of which lever the bolt is pivoted. When clutch lever 6 rests on lug 8 of the brake lever, both in the lower position, the clutch is disengaged and the brake applied. When control rope 18 is raised, both are lifted till bolt 9 slips past projection 17 at which position the clutch is engaged and the brake released. When the rope is lowered, projection 17 retains the bolt 9 and maintains clutch engagement whilst the brake lever 5 descends and gradually applies the brake till pull on the rod 13 releases the bolt and the clutch lever 6 finally drops and disengages the clutch. In order that the lever may be held in some intermediate neutral position so that the hoisting rope when unweighted may be pulled out, neutral lever 21 may be pivoted at 23 so as to move across the up-and-down path ,of brake lever 5. As the latter moves up it pushes past pivoted pawl 24 and may be retained there by the pawl in the neutral position. As the brake lever moves further upwards it abuts against arm 21b to swing the pawl out of the path of brake lever as it subsequently descends and to swing face 21c so as to be struck by the downwardly moving brake lever and to bring the neutral lever to its original position.
