Abstract
396,831. Controlling motor vehicles. MARTIN, J., 51, Bellwood Street, Langside, Glasgow. Feb. 23, 1932, No. 5343. [Class 79 (v).] Foot control mechanism for motor vehicles comprises two pedals, one controlling the brakes and the other being arranged when it is depressed to open the throttle and engage the clutch, the simultaneous depression of both pedals causing the clutch to be disengaged. In the construction shown, the clutch is disengaged by means of a vacuum cylinder I adapted to be connected to the induction pipe by a valve G operated by a link N connected to a floating lever R positioned by a link L. The accelerator pedal F is connected to the lever R by a link M and to the throttle H by a link O, so that when the pedal F is depressed the throttle is opened and the lever R turns about the end remote from the link M so as to operate the valve G and allow the clutch C to be engaged by its spring P<1>. When the pedal is released the throttle closes, and the valve G is operated so as to connect the cylinder I to the induction pipe and thereby disengage the clutch. The brake pedal E is connected by a link K to the floating lever R, and when this pedal is depressed to apply the brakes it rocks the lever R to operate the valve G and thereby disengage the clutch if it is engaged. If the pedal F is depressed at the same time the clutch is nevertheless disengaged by the pedal E since the latter has a much greater effect on the valve G than the pedal F has, due to the disposition of the point of connection of the link N to the lever R. The pedal F may be arranged to release the clutch when depressed and to open the throttle when raised.
