Abstract

445,415. Controlling-pedals for motor vehicles. DARBY, J. H., 26, High Street, Hillmorton, Rugby. Sept. 8, 1934, No. 25840. [Class 79 (v)] A single pedal a is mounted for a rocking lateral movement and for a movement of depression in two positions so that it can act on either the brake lever c or the accelerator d but cannot act on both simultaneously, means being provided whereby the pedal is constrained from lateral movement when it is in either of its depressed positions. In the construction shown, the pedal is mounted on a ball joint b and is constrained by a " gate " g having two slots g<1>, g<2> corresponding respectively to the accelerator and brake positions, the slots being separated by a part g<3> of lesser height than the outer limbs of the slots. The pedal, when released, is returned to its inactive position over the brake lever d by a spring i ; alternatively, two springs may be used, one raising the pedal and the other swinging it to one side. The pedal engages rollers e on the ends of the levers c, d. In a modification, the " gate " is below the ball joint b and is engaged by an arm on the pedal projecting from the lower part of the ball. The accelerator and brake levers may be below the floor boards and may be engaged by members operated by the pedal a so as to avoid the necessity for large apertures in the floor boards. The clutch lever may be similarly situated. According to the Provisional Specification, the levers c, d may be actuated by a slidable plate acting on one lever at one end of its movement and on the other lever at the other end.
