Abstract

476,770. Controlling motor vehicles. WADE, C. Aug. 4, 1936, No. 21464. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] In a combined brake and accelerator control for motor vehicles, the brake pedal carries a laterally slidable abutment by which the accelerator can be controlled without moving the pedal, the arrangement being such however that the accelerator is returned to a reduced speed position when the pedal is depressed to apply the brakes. A plate 5 engageable by the edge of the foot is slidably mounted on the plate 2 of the brake pedal by a rod 4 passing through a lug 3 on the plate 2 which may also have guide slots 13 for projections 12 on the plate 5. With the pedal in the raised position the rod 4 engages a lever 9 pivoted at 10, inclined downwardly away from the pedal and connected by a link 11 to for example the throttle of an internal-combustion engine or the rheostat of an electric motor. When the pedal is depressed. the rod 4, if occupying a low or normal speed position, moves out of contact with the lever 9 so that the lever is returned by the spring 11a. If, however, it is desired to accelerate when taking off the brake, the driver can while easing the pressure on the pedal press the plate 5 laterally to a high speed position so that the speed will be increased proportionately to the upward movement of the pedal.
