Abstract

485,901. Controlling motor vehicles. BERGVALL, B. O. M. Aug. 26, 1937, No. 23381. [Class 79 (v)] The clutch pedal 1, brake pedal 2, and accelerator pedal 3 which closes the throttle when in its lowest position, may be independently operated when desired and can also be simultaneously controlled by one foot on the brake pedal, through inter-engaging members on the three pedals. In the construction shown an arm 4 on the clutch pedal 1 engages under the brake pedal 2, and an arm 7 on the accelerator rod 3 is adapted to be engaged by an arm 15 on a foot-piece 5 pivoted at 6 to the brake pedal. The rod 3 is drawn towards its lowest position, to close the throttle, by a spring 12, and may be rotated by means of a handle 10 to remove the arm 7 from the path of the arm 15. When the brake pedal is fully depressed the brakes are applied, the clutch is disengaged, and the throttle is closed. As the brake pedal is allowed to rise the brakes are first-released, and then the arm 15 engages the arm 7 to lift the rod 3 and open the throttle to an extent depending on the position of the brake pedal. The clutch pedal rises with the brake pedal and allows the clutch to engage. If the driver removes his foot from the footpiece 5 on the brake pedal the throttle is closed by the spring 12, the arm 7 rotating the parts 5, 15 about the pivot 6. The arm 7 may be made flexible or resilient. The arm 4 may be replaced by an arm on the brake pedal overlying the clutch pedal, or the arm 4 may be removable to allow the clutch pedal to be operated entirely independently if desired. In a modification the throttle rod 3 is horizontal.
