Abstract

450,903. Controlling motor vehicles. HULL, H. E., 3700, Massachusetts Avenue, Washington, U.S.A. June 24, 1935, No. 18103. [Class 79 (v)] In a motor vehicle the brake lever 10, Fig. 1, having a pedal 14 is mounted on a transverse shaft 11 and the accelerator lever 13 is mounted on the same shaft, the lever 13 having a pedal 14 projecting through a slot in the pedal 12, so that the throttle lever 17 may be actuated normally against the action of a spring 19 to open the throttle. The lever 13 actuates the lever 17 through a rod 18 pivoted at one end to the lever 13 and having a loose engagement at its other end with the throttle lever. When the pedal 12 is pushed down to apply the brakes, a lever 20, 22 is rocked on its pivot 21 by the brake lever which is connected to it by a link 23. The rod 18, which passes through a slot in lever arm 20, is thereby moved up out of engagement with the lever 17 so that the throttle is immediately closed by spring 19. An arm 26 on the brake lever is also connected by a link 25 with a lever 24, which controls free-wheeling, in such a manner that when the brakes are applied the gear connection with the engine is restored for the engine to assist the brakes. A loose connection between the lever 24 and link 25 allows independent operation of the lever 24 by hand.
