Abstract

396,241. Controlling motor vehicles. CHRISTIANSEN, M. A. A. P., 12, Ole Olsens Allee, Hellerup, Denmark. Sept. 29, 1932, No. 27109. [Class 79 (v).] In motor vehicles of the kind in which the accelerator is closed and the brake actuated by continued depression of a single pedal, means are provided whereby the power impulses of the vehicle are caused to cease at the moment the pedal is released, said means being capable of being rendered inoperative by a device for restricting the power impulses to a predetermined value. The combined accelerator and brake pedal, Fig. 1, is provided with an inset plate 2 controlling a switch in the ignition circuit 3, 4. If, while the master throttlecontrol 5 is wide open as shown, the driver's foot slips off the pedal the plate 2 rises relative to the pedal and breaks the ignition circuit. When the control 5, however, is partially closed, a separate ignition circuit 10, 9 is permanently completed through the contact strip 8 and pin 7. In the modification, shown in Fig. 2, the pedal 1 on being depressed to apply the brake acts through a rod 18, cord 17, and drum 15 to rotate a shaft 13 in a clockwise direction against the action of a spring 14, thus causing a pin 24 attached to the throttlecontrol rod 19 to slide towards the point B of a slot BL concentrically placed in a pulley 16 fixed to the shaft 13, thus keeping the throttlelever L<1> in the closed position shown in firm lines. As the pedal 1 is allowed to rise, the spring 14 rotates the shaft 13 in an anticlockwise direction so that the pin 24 moves towards the point H in a continuation of the slot BL, thus moving further from the centre of the pulley 16 and pushing the rod 19 and lever L<1> towards the open position shown in dotted lines. If the pedal is accidentally released altogether, the shaft 13 rotates further in an anticlockwise direction until the pin 24 reaches the point L<1> of the slot and the throttle is again closed. At the same time a pin 27 strikes a contact 28 and operates a warning lamp or buzzer. The safety device may be put out of action by a spiral lug on the shaft 13 coming against an adjustable and removable arm 20 when the pin 24 is in some part S of the slot corresponding to a limited opening of the throttle.
