Abstract

381,369. Brakes. HULL, H. E., Wardman Park Hotel, Washington, U.S.A. Nov. 2, 1931, No. 30375. [Class 103 (i).] Brake and fuel control mechanism for motor vehicles comprises a brake pedal adapted to be moved forwardly to apply the brakes, and an accelerator member separate from and guidably connected to the brake pedal and arranged to be actuated by the driver's foot while it is still in the brake-pedal engaging position. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the accelerator member 11 is pivoted at 12 to the brake pedal 10 and is operated by sidewise movement of the foot, being connected to the throttle lever 17 by a chain or cord passing over a pulley or pulleys 18, 15. The pulley 15 is mounted on the pivot 16 of the brake pedal so that the throttle is not affected by movement of the brake pedal. In a modification an arrangement of linkwork is employed having a disconnection at one point so that the brake pedal may move without affecting the throttle. In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 6, the brake pedal 10 has a shank 19 sliding in a guide 20 in the floorboard 21 and is connected to an arm 22 operating the brakes. The accelerator member 11 slides in a hollow part of the brake pedal and is connected by a rod 24 to the throttle arm 25. The brake pedal is so situated relatively to the driver's seat, as shown in Fig. 3, that the foot tends to keep on the brake pedal away from the accelerator member, a slight movement of the foot to the left being necessary before the accelerator can be operated.
