Abstract

285,287. Gill, H. A., (Motor Safety Control, Ltd.). May 9, 1927. Controlling different functions by same handle or lever; interlocking and guarding against wrong movements; controlling-apparatus, arrangements of hand, foot, and transmission gear in conjunction with. - Comprises throttle control means wherein the carburettor throttle arm is adapted to be actuated by the clutch pedal, the accelerator pedal and a hand lever, a sliding connection being provided between the accelerator pedal and the hand lever, so that (1) when the clutch pedal is depressed the throttle is brought to the idling position and (2) when either the clutch or the accelerator pedal is released the throttle returns to the position set by the hand lever. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the throttle arm 4 is actuated by a rod 14 controlled by a spring 15 in a casing 13 and connected by another spring 19 to a lever 20 adapted to be rocked by the clutch pedal 2. The casing 13 carries an arm 12 actuated by the accelerator pedal 3 through a rod 10 which passes through a support 9 adjusted to any desired position by linkage 6, 8, gearing 7 and a hand lever (not shown). When the pedal 3 is depressed the rod 10 acts on the casing 13, thus compressing the spring 15 and moving the rod 14 to open the throttle, the spring 19 permitting the rod to move away from the lever 20. On release of the pedal a spring 5 closes the throttle and the rods 14, 10 move back until a stop 11 on the rod 10 abuts against the support 9. When the clutch pedal 2 is depressed the rod 14 is drawn back, compressing the spring 15 in the casing, and the throttle is closed to the idling position, while, when the pedal is released the spring 15 returns the throttle to the position governed by the setting of the hand lever. In the construction shown in Fig. 12, the throttle arm 4 carries an extension 48 to which an arm 49 is pivoted, this arm being connected by a rod 38 to the hand and foot throttle-actuating levers, and by a sliding spring connection 51, 52, 53 to the clutch pedal 2. A modification is described in which the clutch pedal is connected by a cord to the throttle.
