Abstract

458,211. Controlling motor vehicles. ALEXANDER, W., Cliefden, Meredith Street, Homebush, near Sydney, Australia. Dec. 10, 1935, No. 34181. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1934. [Class 79 (v)] A throttle-controlling device comprises a spring coupling 8 and a dashpot 9 disposed between the carburetter 3 and the accelerator pedal or lever 6, whereby sudden opening of the throttle is prevented. The pedal 6 is connected to a rod 13 pressed by a spring 11 against the inner end of a sleeve 10 connected by an arm 14 to the throttle lever 4. The spring is controlled by an adjustable collar 12. The sleeve 10 is also connected by a link 17 to the rod 15 of dashpot 9 comprising a piston 20 having holes 21 and a small hole or leak 23, and a loose valve plate 22 above the piston. When the pedal 6 is depressed the rod 13 is moved to the left and compresses the spring 11 to open the throttle slowly, the valve plate 22 being pressed against the piston 20 by the upward movement of the latter so that liquid can only pass from one side of the piston to the other through the leak 23. When the pedal is released, piston 20 moves downwards and the valve plate 22 moves away therefrom so that there is no resistance to movement and the throttle closes rapidly.
