Abstract

[Class 80 (iii).] In a device in which a driving-pawl on an operating-lever engages with a ratchet-plate, means for taking up slack, particularly in brakes, comprises an adjusting-pawl on the lever adapted to engage with end stops when the normal limit of movement of the lever is exceeded. As shown, a brake lever 1 with release gear, and a sector 3 with rack teeth and an extension 4 are mounted on the same pin 2. The lever 1 engages teeth on the sector 3 through a spring plunger 5, and a biassed pawl 6 also engages the teeth and is mounted in lateral recesses of the lever 1, the ends of the pawl being adapted to strike stops 7, 8 when excessive movement occurs due to slack in the transmission system. The lever 1 and the sector 3 with extension 4 move as a unit, but when slack occurs the end of pawl 6 strikes the stop 8 and is moved laterally to engage a fresh tooth on the sector 3. On the return stroke the other end of the pawl 6 strikes the stop 7 and allows the pawl 5 to slip a tooth and take up the slack.
