Abstract

271,599. Davies, S. I. March 20, 1926. Compensating for wear.-An automatic brake - adjusting mechanism comprises an operating-lever' 1 keyed to a sleeve 2 pinned to a ratchet toothed collar 4 mounted freely on the brake-operating shaft 11 and urged by a spring 13 into engagement with corresponding teeth 5 on a collar 6 slidably keyed to the shaft 11. The collar 6 has ratchet toothed engagement also with a bush 8, the rotational movement of which is limited by stops 9 on the fixed part 10. If the movement of the lever in applying the brakes is such as to cause the collar 6 with the shaft 11 to exceed the movement allowed by the stop 9, the collar 6 slips a tooth relatively to the bush 8 and the slack is thus taken up. In the release movement the lever 1 is returned to its original position and causes the collar 5 to slip a tooth relatively to the collar 6.
