Abstract

265,179. Ainsworth, H. M., Wilde, A. H., and Soc. Anon. des Anciens Etablissements Hotchkiss et Cie. Jan. 28, 1926, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Compensating for wear.-A device for taking up wear automatically in brakes and the like comprises two " free wheel " mechanisms 23, 27. Figs. 1 and 2, acting in the opposite direction one to the other and located, the first between a brake, pedal 7 and a brake rigging lever 11, and the second between the lever 11 and a stop ring 17. The boss 15 of the brake pedal 7 is provided with teeth 25 and is loosely mounted on a sleeve of the lever 11 which is mounted on a spindle 8 of a casting 10 secured on the vehicle. The boss 13 of the lever 11 is provided on one side with teeth 26 which engage with the teeth 25 on the boss 15 of the brake pedal and on the other side with teeth 28 which engage with teeth 29 on the ring 17 which has a limited rotary movement through a pin 21 and a slot 20 in a lug 19 projecting from the ring. The teeth are pressed into engagement by a spring 30 and the position of the brake pedal 7 is maintained by a spring 24 and stop 34. When the pedal 7 is depressed the lever 11 is rotated and the pressure of the spring 30 causes the ring 17 to follow with it until the bottom of the slot 20 contacts with the pin 21. Should the brake be not fully applied due to wear of the parts, the teeth 28 of the lever 11 will slip over the teeth 29 on the ring 17, and on the return stroke of the pedal 7 the teeth 25 of the pedal will slip over the teeth 26 of the lever 11 by a corresponding amount and thus take up the slackness automatically. In a modification, the members 15, 13 and 17 may be concentric bushes, the member 17 having a limited rotary movement on the shaft whilst the inner circumferences of the members 15 and 13 are provided with inclined slots and balls which bear on the outer circumferences of the members 13 and 17 respectively to form " free wheels " acting in opposite directions. The slack may be taken up longitudinally by means of serrated plates 15, 13b, 17 and 36 Fig, 6. The plate 15b is connected by a rod 7 to the brake pedal and the plate 13 bv a rod 2 to the brake and a recess 20b is made in the plate 17b for a stop 21b on the plate 13b. The plates are pressed together by a spring 30. The stop 21b may be replaced by the stem 21 working in a slot cut in the cover plate 10, the plates 13 and 17 being integral in this modification. In a further modification, the teeth between the plates 17b and 36 are spaced to have a lost motion equivalent to the travel of the pin in the slot.
