[Class 103 (i).] Hand and foot actuation. - In mechanism of the kind in which the brakes are applied by re - peated strokes of the hand or foot lever a friction coupling is disp o s e d in the transmission and is adapted to be disengaged to release the brakes. Friction discs 15 are alternately secured to a flange 10 and to a ratchet wheel 18 by bolts 13, 17, these parts being freely rotatable upon a fixed shaft 4. A lever 11 secured to the flange 10 is connected to the brakes and a lever 20 freely rotatable on the boss of the wheel 18 carries a pawl 21 engaging the wheel 18, which is also engaged by a pawl 24 on a fixed pivot. The discs 15 are pressed together by a spring-urged lever 7 on a nut 6 screwing on the shaft 4. The lever 20 is connected to the hand or foot lever and the brakes may thus be applied by oscillating these levers, and are held applied by the pawl 24. To release the brakes, the coupling 15 is slackened by pulling on the lever 7 against the spring 8. Compensating for wear.-The application of a friction coupling similar to that shown in Fig. 1, is shown also as a means for permitting the angular adjustment of two brake levers. In this construction, the bolts 17 for one set of discs are connected directly to the boss of the lever 20, the ratchet wheel 18 and pawls 21, 24 being dispensed with.
