Abstract

405,108. Brake-operating mechanism. OETIKER, E., (trading as OETIKER & CO. ARBENZLASTWAGENFABRIK), Altstetten, Zurich, Switzerland. Jan. 16, 1933, No. 1402. Convention date, Jan. 16, 1932. Addition to 365,901. [Class 103 (i).] Mechanism as described in the parent Specification whereby the initial stage in the application of the brakes is effected by the pivotal movement of an auxiliary lever 3 upon a main lever 2 and the final movement by the lever 2 which is normally locked and is subsequently clutched to the transmission means is provided with a modified locking and clutching device comprising a ballcage 32 secured to the lever 2, the boss 28 of which is adapted to turn upon a fixed ring 27 the balls being normally received in recesses in the ring 27 so that the lever 2 is normally held against movement. The shaft 1 which is connected to the brakes by an arm 25 and pull-rod G has secured to it a member 35 provided with recesses to receive the balls 34. In applying the brakes the lever 3 is first turned about the pivot 3a and turns the shaft 1 through the rod 38 and a disc 37 secured to the shaft. Rotation of the shaft brings the recesses in the member 35 into position to receive the balls 34 so that the cage 32 and lever 2 are then disconnected from the fixed ring 27 and connected to the shaft 1. The levers 3 and 2 thus move together during the final stage of the application of the brakes. The lever 2 may be held in application position by a friction shoe 39b on a spring 39a or by a detent carried by the lever and controlled by a rod passing through the lever 3. As applied to pedal operation, the pedal proper is mounted upon a rod slidable in a rearwardly bent part of the main lever and connected to a cranked lever pivoted upon the main lever and connected to the brake transmission in a similar manner to the lever 3. The ball-cage 32 and the stationary ring 27 can be angularly adjusted in relation to the lever 2 and the fixed support 26 respectively to compensate for wear of the brake linings ; for this purpose, the ball-cage is connected to the lever by a bolt which passes through the boss 28 of the lever and a slot in a flange on the ball-cage, similar means of connection being provided for the ring 27 to the support 26. The initial stage of the movement in applying the brakes may thus be varied.
