Abstract

251,500. Gray, J. A. S. Aug. 19, 1925. Brake mechanism.-A back-pedalling hub brake is provided with means whereby the internal brake band may be expanded into engagement with the braking surface of the hub by hand, in the event of the breakage or disengagement of the driving-chain of the cycle, or whereby the brake band may be retained in the applied position without back-pedalling. A bellcrank lever 27, 28, Figs. 1 and 4, is mounted on the hub spindle 8, and its arm 27 carries a pin 29, which passes through a curved slot 30 in a disc 1, integral with the usual anchoring-arm 2 secured at 5 to the cycle frame, and engages with the usual internal lever adapted to expand the spring brake band on back-pedalling. The arm 28 of the bell-crank lever is connected by a Bowden-wire control to a link 39 pivoted to the lower end of a hand-lever 34, which is retained in adjusted position by a ratchet quadrant 32 and a pawl controlled by a push-button 36. The bell-crank lever carries a shield-plate 41 adapted to cover the slot 30 and thus exclude dust &c.
