387,810. Brakes. RAFFERTY, F. W., QUIGG, R. J., and LANIGAN, F. J., St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. Dec. 22, 1931, No. 35480. Convention date, Nov. 9. [Class 103 (i).] A brake band is normally held from engagement with the drum by springs against the action of another spring which upon initial movement of an actuator connected to the band applies the band. The brake band 10 anchored at its middle point by fixed lugs 11 and a lug 12 on the band is engaged at its ends 19 by levers 15, 16 mounted on fixed points 13, 14. An actuator lever 25 for the band carried by a spindle 26 is connected by links 21, 22 to the levers 15, 16. A spring 30 connected to the levers tends to apply the band 10 but is normally prevented from doing so by springs 31, 32 connected to the links 21, 22 and to fixed points. When, however, the lever 25 is turned by the rod 28 beyond a critical position the spring 30 is able to overcome the springs 31, 32 and apply the band to the drum. In the event of failure of the springs the band can be applied by the lever 25.
