Abstract

280,720. Clark, D'A. M., (Bendix Brake Co.). Nov. 30, 1926. Shoes acting on drums; compensating for wear.-In an internal expanding brake mechanism for vehicles of the kind in which the clearance of one or more of the brake shoes is determined by means of a self-adjusting stop co-operating with a frictional clamping-device, an angularly movable forked blade 52 mounted on the barking plate 12 is arranged to embrace a part movable with one or more of the brake shoes, e.g. the pivot pin 20 between two shoes 14, 16, one arm 50 of the fork being engaged by the part 20 when the brake is applied and the other arm 50 being engaged, after a short lost motion, when the brake is released. In the construction shown, the stop or fork 52 is pivoted on a stem 54, Fig. 4, and frictionally clamped to the plate 12 by a nut 56. When the brake is applied the pin 20 engages one arm of the fork and moves it forwardly until the full braking pressure is exerted; when the brake. is released, the pin 20, after a short lost motion, engages the opposite arm of the fork and is held thereby, as the return springs 26, 30 are unable to overcome the frictional resistance provided by the nut 56. The space between the arms 50 exceeds the diameter of the pin 20 so that the amount of lost motion permitted determines the clearance of the shoe 16 in the released position. In order to allow the operating cam 28 automatically to centre itself, the cam spindle passes through a shiftable bracket 36, Fig. 2, secured to the plate 12 by two bolts 39, 42, one, 39, of which is fixed to the plate 12 and passes through an enlarged hole 39a in the bracket 36, while the other, 42, is fixed to the bracket 36 and passes through an elongated slot 44 in the plate 12.
