397,984. Adjusting brakes. RAILTON, R. A., Brooklands Track, Byfleet, Surrey. May 25, 1932, No. 14796. [Class 103 (i).] Movement of an automatically adjustable stop for determining the clearance between a brake shoe or other brake member and the rotating drum or other coacting brake member in a hydraulically applied brake is freely permitted in the direction for reducing the clearance and is resisted in the opposite direction as by a coil-clutch member disposed between the stop and a fixed member, the arrangement being such that the clearance can be increased when desired by means accessible from the outside of the anchor plate of the brake. The brake shown comprises a pair of brake shoes 12 pivoted at one end on a fixed plate 11 and connected at the other end to a hydraulic cylinder which applies them to a drum 9. The stop device comprises a pin 32 on the shoe 12 engaging with clearance the forked part 31 of a cap 26 rotatable on a socket 23 fixed to the plate 11. One end 34 of a coil clutch spring 33 passes through a hole in the cap 26 and the other end through an arcuate slot 36 in the socket 23. If in applying the brake the movement of the shoe 12 exceeds the clearance allowed by the fork 31 the cap 26 with the spring is freely rotated but reverse movement of the cap and spring when the shoe is disengaged from the drum is prevented by the binding action of the spring against the socket. The clearance of the shoe can be increased when desired by turning the spring by its other end 35.
