Abstract
550,348. Internal expanding brakes. KIRKSTALL FORGE, Ltd., and COWELL, F. R. Sept. 4, 1941, No. 11319. [Class 103 (i)] In a brake such as described in Specification 542,112 comprising a pair of carriers adapted to be moved outwardly each to apply a pair of shoes to a drum in such a manner that one end of each shoe is presented to the drum before the other end, the shoes being permitted limited circumferential movement on the carriers, one shoe of each pair is arrested by a stop and one end of one shoe of a pair abuts the adjacent end of a shoe of the other pair whereby the shoes are tilted to press these ends against the drum. As shown, the carriers 10 are. pivoted on rods 11 carried by an adjuster 12 and are forced apart at the upper ends by an expander 17. Two pairs of shoes 19 19a, bear each at one end 21 on rollers 23 carried by the carriers. Stops 27 mounted on the anchor plate of the brake are disposed between adjacent ends of each pair of shoes. When the carriers are moved outwards, the shoe ends 21 are initially pressed against the drum and if the drum is rotating in the direction of the arrow the end 21 of the shoes 19 abuts on the stops 27 while the ends 29a of the shoes 19a abuts on the end 29 of the shoes 19 whereby these ends are forced against the drum and a self energising action is also obtained. The brake is equally effective with the opposite direction of drum rotation the ends 21 of shoes 19a thus abutting on the stops. Springs 24 hold the shoes in normal position in relation to the carriers. In a modification each pair of adjacent rollers 23 is mounted on the ends of a link pivoted at its midpoint to the respective carrier 10 whereby an equalized pressure is applied to' the shoes by the rollers. Automatic adjusting means as described in Specification 550,349, for taking up excessive clearance that would otherwise develop between the shoe ends and the stops 27 as the linings wear, and one form of which is indicated at 30 is provided. An expander may be arranged at both ends of the carriers, the pivot device 11, 12 being dispensed with.
