Compensating for wear; applied by springs; electric and magnetic; indicators, applications of. -In an automatic device for adjusting brake shoes relatively to the levers or other moving supports on which they are mounted, so as to compensate for wear of the shoes, the levers or straps 3 carrying the shoes 2 and pivoted at 4 have arranged therein rods 11, 12 provided with wedges 10 against which the shoes are held by springs 15. A ratchet nut 16 on the rod 11 held by a spring 17 against a surface on one of the levers 3 to prevent axial movement of the nut is engaged by a pawl 19 on a bar 20 connected to the other lever 3. If during an application of the brake, sufficient wear has taken place, the pawl 19 slips over a tooth of the ratchet nut and during the release movement, the ratchet is thus turned moving the rod 11 and wedge 10 thereon downwardly to displace the shoe towards the drum 1. The movement of the rod 11 is transmitted to the rod 12 associated with the other shoe by bell-cranks 13 on the pivots 4 and a bar 14. The brake shown is of the type in which the brake is applied by springs 5 and held off by a magnet 6. A spring 7 acting on one strap 3 biases the system so as to hold a stop 8 on the other strap against, a fixed abutment when the brake is released to ensure that both shoes are clear of the drum. The bar 14 may be arranged to actuate a switch 21 to operate a warning device or to cut off the power supply to the magnet 6 when the wear of the shoes has reached a predetermined limit.
