A shoe drum brake in which arcuate shoes in a rotatable drum are urged apart at one end by an actuator and their other ends engage a fixed abutment is provided with an automatic adjusting device which comprises a lever 12 engaged at one end by a thrust member (not shown) of the actuator 4 that actuates one of the shoes 2 and connected at its other end to an arm 15 for adjusting the position of the abutment of at least that shoe, the lever being pivoted directly or indirectly to the backplate 1 at an intermediate point 11 in its length. The abutments for the two shoes are in a housing 3 secured to the back plate. Indirect pivoting of the lever 12 is used when the actuator 4 is floating and is achieved by an arcuate link 10 that extends between a pivot pin 7 on the actuator and a pivot pin 9 on the abutment housing. When the brake lining wears the lever 12 turns sufficiently, when acted on by the thrust member of the actuator, to move the arm 15 far enough to cause a ring 16, from which it projects and which forms a ratchet device, to separate the abutments by an amount which compensates for the increased clearance. A screw with a conical end between the inner ends of the abutments may be incorporated, for manual adjustment. On release of the brake the lever 12 is returned by a spring 23.
