Abstract

909,133. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 28, 1959 [May 15, 1958], No. 15590/58. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] A brake comprises a friction pad assembly on each side of rotatable member, mechanism including a connecting rod between the two assemblies, for moving the assemblies against the member, and wear compensating means which also shortens the effective length of the connecting rod. In the embodiment shown, a disc brake includes pads 5 on backing plates 2, 3, pivoted to a fixed member and moved against disc by a lever 6, pivoted at 8 to plate 3, and a connecting rod comprising a two-start bolt 12 screwed, at one end, into a sleeve 9 carried by the lever 6, and fixed at the other end to plate 2. A four-start bolt 14, interconnecting plates 2, 3, is fixed to plate 2 by pin 16 and passes through an aperture in plate 3; a nut 17 on bolt 14 seats on plate 3, has teeth 18 engaging teeth 11 on sleeve 9, and is engaged by a spring 20 tending to rotate it on to bolt 14. A rod 22 seated in recess 23 in plate 2, Fig. 4, passes through a counterbored aperture in plate 3 ; a housing 25 fixed to the plate 3 holds a sleeve 24 and spring 26 in the aperture and houses a coiled spring 27 frictionally engaging the rod 22. On braking, the rod 22 and spring 27 compress spring 26 until sleeve 24 abuts the plate 2 when normal brake clearance has been taken up. If the pads 5 have worn, the rod 22 is forced through spring 27 and the brakes applied. On brake release, spring 26 releases the brake through sleeve 24 and rod 22, and due to resetting of the brake clearance the nut 17 will be moved away from plate 3; spring 20 rotates the nut to take up this slack, the nut rotating sleeve 9 to correspondingly shorten the connecting link 9, 12.
