Abstract

926,992. Disc brakes. J. R. COXON. Dec. 14, 1960 [Jan. 22, 1960], No. 2439/60. Class 103 (1). In a spot-type disc brake for motor vehicles, the calliper housing 3 is mounted on a resilient plate 13 attached by suitable means to the vehicle to permit limited movement of the calliper in a direction substantially parallel to the axis of the disc. The calliper housing 3, shown in Fig. 2, is mounted on a spring metal plate 13 mounted on a flange 4 of a stub axle 5 and the housing is provided with a single hydraulic piston and cylinder arrangement 19, 7 on one side of the brake disc 1 to actuate one friction pad 17 and a friction pad 18 is carried by an arm 8 of the calliper housing 3. The friction pad 17 is mounted on a second spring metal plate 16 arranged face to face with the first plate 13 such that operation of the piston 19 to apply the brake causes the two plates 13, 16 to bend apart from each other to cause frictional contact of the pads 17, 18 with the brake disc 1. Adjustment for wear of the friction pads is achieved by adjustment of screw 25. Instead of the plate 13 being formed of spring metal it may be rigid and fixed to the vehicle through a resilient pad by which the plate is made springy.
