Abstract

1443544 Disc brakes; wear indicators GENERAL MOTORS FRANCE 5 Dec 1974 [11 Dec 1973] 57258/73 Heading F2E A pad wear indicating device 51 comprises a metal contact member 52 mounted in an insulator 53 in the end of a friction pad backing plate 26 and having a head with a toothed or knurled end 54 which engages a non-rotary surface of the brake, when a pad is worn sufficiently, to complete an electric warning circuit. An indicating device 51 may be mounted on one or each of two opposed pads of a brake assembly. The disc brake assembly shown comprises a body 2 with an arm 3 at each end having extensions 4, 5 and a slidable caliper 6 with two side-by-side operating cylinders 9 on one side supplied from separate hydraulic circuits through respective inlets or from a single circuit through one inlet and a cross-drilling. Tubular resilient springs 39 (Fig. 5) surrounding the stems 20 of two pins 18 engage grooves 16, 17 and 27 in the caliper, arms 3 and pad backing plates 26 respectively to locate these parts for relative sliding. Both pins 18 are retained by a bent wire spring 35 with each end 36 engaging a groove at the end of a pin 18 opposite to its head 21. Rattling is prevented by the springs 39 and springs 47 (Figs. 7 to 9, not shown) mounted on each end of each pad. During braking an edge 30 at the trailing end of the pad engages the caliper which reacts at its leading end against the extensions 4, 5 of the body 2.
