Abstract

1275440 Disc brakes; preventing squeal GENERAL MOTORS CORP 16 Oct 1969 [6 Nov 1968] 50813/69 Heading F2E A disc brake assembly comprises a caliper 1 including a damping arrangement which damps squeal-producing vibrations thereof, the damping arrangement comprising a resilient deformable element, e.g. a spring 16 which acts to dampen vibrations of the brake pad 6 but which has its movement in a restoring direction limited so that upon release of the brake pad 6 from a disc engaging position, the brake pad 6 has clearances from guide surfaces 10 of the caliper 1. As shown in Fig. 3, a part 15 includes a guide surface 10 and the part 15 is urged by springs 16 which are pressed against a plate 17 in the claiper 1, the movement of the part 15 towards the caliper 1 being limited by stops 20, and towards the brake pad 6 by the engagement of a head 40 of an attachment 19 with a wall 41. As seen in Fig. 4 (not shown), the resilient member comprises a leaf spring (23) which includes the guide surface (10). As seen in Fig. 6 (not shown), the resilient member comprises a deformable plastics ring (28). As particularly described the disc brake has brake pads 6 on either side of the disc which are moved by respective piston and cylinders.
