Abstract

The disc brake for a vehicle has the moving disc (12) positioned between two housing halves (10) with a friction pad each side of the disc. Each pad is mounted on a sliding plate (14, 16) forced inwards towards the disc by a hydraulic piston. The edges (36) of each plate top and bottom slide against contact faces (38) of the housing as they are pushed inwards for brake application and on their return travel. These contact faces are grooved, to assist removal of dirt and corrosion. The grooves are parallel and regularly spaced, and are parallel to the axis of the disc. Each groove is U-shaped with a rounded bottom between straight sloping sides. The width at the top of each groove is equal to the width of the flat face between grooves. The grooves are used to hold lubricant and the flat faces can be cadmium plated.
