Abstract

951,602. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. March 11, 1960 [Jan. 17, 1959], No. 1809/59. Headings F2E and F2F. A disc brake has at least one friction pad that is permitted limited movement with the disc, this movement being utilized to provide a servo action increasing the force with which the pad is applied to the disc. Pads 12, Fig. 1, are moved against a disc by pressure from a master cylinder acting in cylinders 16 via union &c. 24, 25, 26, 27 and 24, 28, 29 and acting in annular chambers 17 via passage 33 and groove 34 in valve 32 and passages 36, 37 ; at a certain pressure, valve 32 moves to close passage 36. The pistons 15 in cylinders 16 act on the backing plates 13 through push rods 14. Pads 12 move with the disc causing balls 23 in recesses 22 in the backing plates 13 and piston head 19 to firmly apply the brake ; the valve 32 preventing pressure developed in chambers 17 from passing back to the master cylinder. On brake release, a spring 35 moves valve 32 to release fluid from chamber 17. In Fig. 2, pressure from a master cylinder acts in chambers 45 and via valve 56 in chamber 44 to move piston 46 to move pads 41 via balls 47 in grooves in the backing plates 42 and pistons 46, valve 56 closing at a certain pressure to close chambers 44 from the master cylinder. Movement of the pads with the disc causes plungers 51 to force fluid from chamber 52 into chambers 44 to augment the pressure previously supplied from the master cylinder. The disc or caliper may be slid axially by one pad to engage the disc with a pad fixed in the caliper. The recesses 22, Fig. 1, may be replaced by grooves in the piston and backing plate, the latter two members being slightly inclined relative to the disc. Pistons 18 and 43 advance automatically in response to pad wear since the system is topped up from the master cylinder reservoir as the pads wear.
