Abstract
1,034,172. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 1, 1963 [April 10, 1962], No. 12753/63. Divided out of 1,033,083. Heading F2E. In a servo disc brake wherein a pair of friction elements are moved obliquely to engage a braking surface of the disc by a brake-applying mechanism adapted to apply a thrust perpendicular to the braking surface, compensating means ensure that each friction element is subjected to an equal thrust. In one embodiment, Fig. 3, pairs of friction pads 29 on each side of the disc which have triangular backing plates 30 are applied against the disc by pistoncylinder device 17, 18. The thrust from each piston 17 is transmitted to each pair of pads by a pressure plate 22 in rocking engagement with a stem 20 of the piston 17 and a pair of thrusttransmitting pivoted levers 32 which abut surfaces 31 of the backing plates 30 and thereby apply a thrust in the direction of movement of the pads the latter being guided by oblique surfaces 28 on the caliper. The pads may be removed through apertures created when the torque-taking members 26 are unbolted from the caliper. In a modification the pressure plates 22 bear directly on the friction pads 29. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the caliper is so pivoted that it can move axially to force the pad 41 secured to the caliper against the disc when the pads 46 are applied against the disc by piston-cylinder device 48, 49. The pads are guided by oblique surfaces 45 and have thrust transmitted thereto by pivoted levers 51 which abut arms 50 formed by the cylinder 49. The latter can rock on the piston 48 so as to ensure that equal pressure is applied to each pad 46.
