Abstract
1,008,826. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Aug. 15, 1963 [Aug. 15, 1962], No. 31260/62. Heading F2E. In a disc brake of the floating calliper type the directly actuated friction pad has a rigid back plate having notches slidably engaged with guides carried by a stationary torque-taking member, on which member the calliper is mounted to swing about an axis at right-angles to the disc. The torque-taking member 11 has guides 17 engaging notches in the lugs 21 extending from the backing plate of each brake pad, springs 23 preventing rattle when the brake is off. The guides 17 may be inclined to the plane of the disc 10 to provide a selfenergizing action. The calliper 24 is pivoted to the member 11 on pins 20 which have conical portions 31 engaging compressible washers 32. The abutment between the actuating piston and its brake pad backing plate may comprise a ball or a part spherical member. In another embodiment the stationary member may comprise a disc having an axially extending flange cut away to accommodate the calliper, the friction pad guides being mounted on the flange on opposite sides of the gap.
