865,048. Hydraulic braking systems; brake clearance adjusters. ZAPADOCESKE AUTODRUZSTVO V. PLZNI LIDOVE DRUZSTVO. Nov. 6, 1957 [Nov. 7, 1956], No. 34591/57. Class 103 (1). An hydraulic braking system comprises a piston 4 slidable in cylinder 1 and connected (by a rod 25) with a brake shoe or pad, a spring ring 7 having a length greater than half the length 30 of piston 4 surrounding a reduced diameter portion 9 of the piston, the friction resistance between ring 7 and cylinder 1 being greater than the force produced by the retracting spring of the shoe or pad, and an abutment 8 attached to piston 4 engageable with ring 7 in the brake release position in which position a second abutment 10 of the piston is spaced from the ring 7 by the distance 16 corresponding to the brake clearance, the abutment 10 being engageable with ring 7 to adjust the position of the ring on brake application. In Fig. 1, as applied to internal shoe-drum brakes, two pistons 4 are forced apart by fluid from aperture 2 to apply the brakes, the abutment 10 moving ring 7 should wear have taken place. The inner diameter of ring 7, which is split at 23, is greater than the outer diameter of portion 9. In Fig. 2, not shown, abutment 8 is integral with rod 27; whereas the abutment in Fig. 3, not shown, is formed by a dust cap clamped between portion 9 and rod 25 and slidable on cylinder 1. Single ended cylinders are used for disc brakes, Figs. 4, 5, not shown; in Fig. 4; a heat-insulating block is placed between piston 4 and the friction pad backing plate; and in Fig. 5, the cylinder is fixed to one clutch-type disc and the piston engages another disc, the discs being relatively rotatable by the piston and cylinder and spread apart by a ball and cam arrangement.
