Abstract

A friction lining for a brake or a clutch consists of sintered metallic elements 11, Fig. 1, attached to a metal back-plate 12, the space between them being filled with an organically bonded friction material 13. The sintered elements are distributed such that substantially the whole surface of a co-operating friction member is contacted by a sintered element during relative movement, the arrangement being designed to improve heat dissipation. The elements are attached to the back-plate by compressive welding, by adhesive, or by engagement of recesses and projections on respective parts, e.g. 14, 15 (35, Fig. 3 44, 45, Fig. 4, not shown). The elements may be cylindrical, stepped cylindrical, or frusto-conical. In another form they are elongated and retained by tongues (64, Figs. 6, 7, not shown) stamped from the plate (62) and bent up to engage the elements. In one form (Fig. 2, not shown), the back plate has a dovetail projection for engagement in a holder of a rail disc brake. In an internal shoe-drum type lining (Fig. 3, not shown) a recess (36) is left in the surface of the organically bonded friction material (34) around each element (33) and in another form (Fig. 5, not shown), the back-plate projection (44, 45) engaging each element is non- circular to prevent rotation of the element.
