Abstract

616,982. Friction linings. LE CARBONE LORRAINE. Feb. 22, 1946, No. 5569. Convention date, March 9, 1945. [Class 103 (i)] A friction lining having a composite surface comprises blocks 3 of amorphous carbon or graphite separated by masses 4 of moulded compound consisting of a fibrous filler in a heat-hardenable synthetic binder and secured by a layer 2 of adhesive to a yielding or resilient backing strip 1 made of a material such as metallic gauze or an asbestos or glass web. The moulded compound may be constituted by a mixture of asbestos, glass wool, steel wool, aluminium wool or other fibrous material with a thermosetting synthetic resin and fatty oil preparation. In manufacture, the strips 1 are passed through a rolling machine while the layer of adhesive is applied, and the blocks 3 and masses 4 are then positioned on the strips and the whole subjected to a further rolling operation. The process is completed by oven drying. The blocks 3 may be cubical, cylindrical or prismoidal and arranged in quincunx formation. The holes for securing the lining to its carrier are formed in the masses 4. One or more carbon blocks are positioned at the point where the maximum pressure is exerted on the lining.
