Abstract

1492712 Carbon laminates GOODYEAR AEROSPACE CORP 23 March 1976 [14 April 1975] 11683/76 Heading B5N A carbon brake disc comprises at least one soft carbon layer 21, at least one carbon/carbon composite layer 33 and means securing the carbon/carbon composite layer(s) to the soft carbon layer(s) to form the brake disc. Soft carbon is defined as being carbon other than diamond, e.g. amorphous carbon or graphite and a carbon/carbon composite layer is defined as being a layer manufactured from a carbon base material and containing carbon filament or fabric layers therein. The layers may be secured together by mechanical means, e.g. rivets 25 and metal clips 27, alternatively, a high temperature cement may be used. The disc may be made by making at least one soft carbon layer, making at least one carbon/carbon composite layer and securing the layers together. In a preferred process, at least one carbon/carbon composite layer is made, at least one layer of carbonaceous material is disposed thereagainst and the layer of carbonaceous material pyrolized under pressure to form a bonded layer of soft carbon, the carbonaceous material, e.g. petroleum pitch, a furan resin or coal tar pitch being admixed with a binder prior to pyrolysis. The composite layer may be made by saturating a fabric or filaments of cellulose rayon or polyacrylonitrile with a bonding agent pyrolizable to carbon, e.g. petroleum pitch, coal tar pitch, a furan resin or a phenolic resin, a plurality of the impregnated fabric or filament layers being assembled, compressed under pressure and heated to a high temperature.
