Abstract
1,265,164. Disc brakes. SOC. ANON. FRANCAISE DU FERODO. 21 Feb., 1969 [22 Feb., 1968], No. 9547/69. Heading F2E. A disc brake comprises a frame 18, a disc 10, two brake shoes 14A, 14B pivoted on two pad levers 21A, 21B, one on each side of the disc, electromagnetic and hydraulic actuating means 29, 60 and mean for automatically taking up pad wear. Each shoe includes a lug 15, attached by a pin 16 to a bracket 17 of the frame, and four transverse webs 19A to which a pad lever is pivoted. Each lever 21 comprises two plates 22A, 22B interconnected by hinge control and bearing pins 23A, 24A, 25A. The levers are interconnected by a tie-rod 98 and springs 26 attached to the ends of pins 25A, 25B. Control pin 24A is resiliently mounted in two fixed parallel tie-rods 27 attached to the yoke 28 of an actuating electromagnet 29 and control pin 24B is pivotally attached to armature 37 of the electromagnet. A cylinder block 60 mounted on the end of rods 27 contains an hydraulically actuated piston which reacts against the pin 24A. The pads are held against the disc in the absence of electric current by a stack of Belleville washers 53, the tension being adjusted by a plug 45. The brakes are released by supplying current or by tightening a nut 50. With current on, the brakes can be gradually applied hydraulically when the resilient mounting 33 of pin 24A is deformed. The pins 25A, 25B are maintained by a spring 26 against a tapered block 71 against which they pivot during brake application. To adjust for wear, rod 98 is mounted on lever 21B and connected to a lever in a bearing 70 on lever 21A which permits clockwise movement only, with some clearance to allow for brake release, so that the effective length of rod 98 is reduced if wear occurs. On retraction the levers 21 first pivot about pins 25A, 25B and then about the effective ends of rod 98 when pins 25A, 25B are pulled apart. This allows block 71 to fall to a new position until it finally actuates a switch 85 which operates a warning light, stops current to the electromagnet 29 or to the supply circuit of the driving circuit to which the disc is coupled. In another embodiment, the pins extend through the levers 21, the end of one pin 24 is fixed to the frame, the end of the other pin pivoted on the frame and the other ends attached to the actuating means.
