Abstract

1,238,023. Railway vehicle disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 3 Sept., 1968 [18 Sept., 1967; 19 Feb., 1968], Nos. 42385/67 and 8047/68. Heading F2E. A railway vehicle disc brake includes a pair of levers 26, 28 pivotally mounted between the ends of a yoke comprising two plates 36, 38, a brake shoe 20, 22 being mounted about a pin 24 at the end of each lever. The brake is attached to the vehicle at three points: one to the yoke and one to each of the brake shoes. As shown, a boss 50 on the yoke plate 36 is mounted about a pivot pin 56 between the legs 52, 54 of a link which is rigid with the vehicle body, and each brake shoe is pivotally connected to the vehicle body via a drag link 58 and two pivot pins 62, 64. In operation, an hydraulic motor 86 mounted on a trunnion connected to the lever 26 is actuated to depress a rod 88 inside trunnion 80 so as to pivot lever 28 about its pivotal connection with the yoke and to cause the brake shoe 22 to engage a disc 18 mounted on the vehicle wheel 10. By reaction, brake shoe 20 is similarly engaged with a disc 16, and the connections of the brake shoes with the vehicle body allow the brake shoes to remain parallel to their adjacent discs 16, 18 while they are restrained against pivotal movement, relative to the discs, about pivots 24. Release springs 76, 78, are provided. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the yoke pivot pin (56) is disposed perpendicular to the pin 56 as shown and is located in the yoke boss 50 by means of one or more rubber bushes (50A) such that the yoke can rotate about an axis as in the embodiment shown and is biased towards a central position. The bush (50A) also provides a resilient mounting for the motor 86. A second motor may be inserted between the free ends 94, 96 of the levers 26, 28 for the purpose of operating the brake as a parking brake.
