Abstract

972,615. Disc brakes. F. J. HOPE. Feb. 27, 1962 [Feb. 27, 1961], No. 7181/61. Heading F2E. A mechanically actuated servo disc brake particularly for a vehicle includes face cam operated master disc brake means adapted to engage the planar sides of the disc and effective under a force generated by the frictional drag of the rotating disc to bring into braking operation face cam operated slave disc brake means. As shown, a lever 3 operated by the driver through an air piston-cylinder device 2, 1 is formed with oppositely directed cams 3a, 3b and is mounted on a shaft 3c with the cams 3a, 3b in contact with cams on a part 4 secured to the shaft and a part 5 carried by a resilient torque arm 9 pivotally movable about the axle 11. The shaft 3c also carries a part 5a which together with part 5 have friction pads 6, 7 mounted thereon so that on pivotal movement of the lever 3 the pads contact the brake disc 8. Simultaneously with the master brake being applied rotation of the disc 8 is effective to pivot the arm 9 which operates through link 12 and cam arms 13 the slave brakes 16. The latter are mounted on an arm 14 secured to the axle and are of the same construction as the master brake means. The lever 3 may be actuated by an hydraulic system, a vacuum system, an electrical system or a direct mechanical linkage. In modifications the slave brakes may be operated through compensating arms and secondary links, the brake parts may be spring- loaded to maintain the friction pads out of contact with the disc, and the pivotal movement of the torque arm 9 may be assisted or resisted by the action of a spring or springs. The master brake may be supported on direct linkages which actuate the slave brakes. Two master brakes may be provided on the ends of a diametric torque arm, operation of either of which causes the operation of the slave brakes. Specification 972,616 is referred to.
