Abstract

1,229,186. Disc brakes. KELSEY-HAYES CO. 26 July, 1969, No. 37644/69. Heading F2E. A disc brake assembly comprises a fixed brake pad carrier 10 connected to a bridge member 14 by a bolt 16 supporting a spacer sleeve 18, a floating brake pad carrier 22 slidably mounted on the spacer sleeve 18 between the fixed carrier 10 and the bridge member 14 and on the opposite side of a disc 38 to the fixed carrier 10 and an actuating lever 34 having a portion positioned between the bridge member 14 and the floating carrier 22 for pivotal movement, the lever 34 being operative to exert a camming action to force the floating carrier 22 towards the fixed carrier 10 with axial sliding of the disc 38 therebetween to thereby apply the brake. As shown in Figs. 1, 3 the actuating lever 34 is pivotally mounted on a pivot pin 26 which is fixed to the floating carrier 22 and the lever 34 and the bridge member 14 are provided with complementary V-shaped surfaces which nest in the " brake-off" position but which are forced apart as the lever 34 is pivoted and cams the floating carrier 22 towards the fixed carrier 10 through the intermediary of thrust bearing washers 36 and against the action of a compression spring 32. As shown in Fig. 6, an actuating lever 44 is pivotable about a pivot pin 48 to move a second pin 46 in an arc around the pivot pin 48 and, in turn, force the floating carrier 22 towards the disc 38 and set the brake.
